Overview

Most Zanzibar combo tours ask you to choose between geography and experience — you sacrifice driving time to fit two big activities into one day.

The Blue Lagoon Starfish & Cave Swimming combo is the rare exception: both stops sit inside the same 30-minute window of the southeast coast, so you spend your time in the water, not on the road.

It also pairs two completely different sensory experiences. The Blue Lagoon is bright, open, warm and full of life — coral, fish and the densest starfish concentration on the island. The cave is the opposite: cool, sunlit-from-above, mineral-still, and otherworldly. By the time you finish, you’ve experienced both faces of Zanzibar’s water in a single day.

Stop 1 — Blue Lagoon & Starfish Beach at Michamvi

You board a traditional wooden boat from Michamvi beach on the Michamvi Pingwe peninsula, on Zanzibar’s southeast coast. The reef sits just offshore in calm, shallow water — perfect for first-timers, kids and anyone nervous about deep ocean snorkeling. The coral garden is alive with angelfish, snappers, batfish, octopus, moray eels, and the colourful sea stars that give this spot its name. Once you’re back on land, your guide walks you along Starfish Beach where the shallows reveal more orange, red and blue sea stars scattered across the sand. Read the full Blue Lagoon snorkeling tour →

Stop 2 — Cave Swimming at Maalum or Kuza

From Michamvi we drive 15–20 minutes inland to your chosen cave. Maalum Cave (Paje) is an open-top limestone sinkhole where sunlight pours directly into a turquoise freshwater pool — the most photogenic cave in Zanzibar, with an on-site spa and restaurant for post-swim relaxation. Kuza Cave (Jambiani) is the cultural alternative: a sacred 50-metre sinkhole formed over 250,000 years, run as a community NGO, with optional drumming lessons, Swahili cooking classes, and Red Colobus monkeys on the grounds. Both have crystal-clear, cool freshwater and are open year-round regardless of tide. Read the full Cave Swimming guide →

Blue Green tip: Book the morning boat slot for the Blue Lagoon (the light is at its best and the lagoon is quietest), then time the cave for early afternoon when the sun angle inside Maalum’s open ceiling is at its most dramatic.

Why You’ll Love This Tour

This is the combo we book most often for guests staying in Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani, Michamvi and Pingwe — because the pickup-to-drop-off time is short enough that you still have your evening free. It’s also the combo we recommend to anyone who has booked Stone Town and Jozani on other days and is looking for something water-focused, family-friendly and visually unforgettable for their last day on the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking

Where exactly does this tour take place?

The Blue Lagoon and Starfish Beach are at Michamvi, on the Michamvi Pingwe peninsula on Zanzibar's southeast coast. The cave swim is either at Maalum Cave in Paje or Kuza Cave in Jambiani — both inland, both about 15–20 minutes by car from Michamvi.

Which cave should I choose — Maalum or Kuza?

Pick Maalum if you want the most photogenic, polished cave swim with a spa and restaurant on site. Sunlight pours through the open ceiling onto turquoise water — it's stunning and ideal for couples and photographers.

Pick Kuza if you want cultural depth alongside the swim — drumming, Swahili cooking, NGO support — and you're travelling with kids who'll love the cooking class. Read the full comparison on our cave swimming guide.

How long does the full tour take?

The core combo runs about 6 hours door-to-door for guests on the southeast coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani, Michamvi). It can be extended to a full day by adding lunch at The Rock Restaurant or a Kae Funk sunset — both pair naturally because they're in the same neighbourhood.

Is this tour suitable for children and non-swimmers?

Absolutely. The Blue Lagoon is shallow and calm — one of the most beginner- and kid-friendly snorkel spots in Zanzibar — and the cave pools are enclosed, calm, and easily managed with a life jacket. Starfish Beach is a huge hit with children. Life jackets are provided at both stops on request.

What marine life will I see at the Blue Lagoon?

Expect dense schools of angelfish, snappers, batfish and rainbow runners over healthy hard and soft corals. Sharp-eyed snorkelers spot octopus, moray eels, lionfish, puffer fish and mantis shrimp tucked into the coral. The main draw is the starfish — the Blue Lagoon has one of the highest sea-star concentrations on the island.

Can we touch or pick up the starfish?

Please don't. Lifting starfish out of the water — even briefly — damages them. Photograph them in the water, give them space, and let everyone after you enjoy them too. Your guide will demonstrate the right way to admire them up close.

What if it rains?

Light rain doesn't affect either stop — the boat ride is short and the cave is partially or fully covered. We avoid running this tour during the long rains of April and May when reef visibility drops and the roads to Kuza Cave become muddy. We'll always check the day's conditions with you before pickup.

Do I need to bring snorkeling gear?

No — masks, fins, life jackets and water shoes are all provided. Bring your own if you prefer the fit, but it's not required.

How does this compare to Safari Blue or the Jozani + Cave combo?

Safari Blue is a longer full-day dhow trip from the southwest coast (Fumba), focused on a sandbank, snorkeling and a seafood feast — bigger, busier, more expensive. Jozani + Cave swaps the reef for a rainforest walk with Red Colobus monkeys. Pick Blue Lagoon + Cave if you want pure water and want to stay on the southeast coast all day. See our Safari Blue page or Jozani + Cave combo for direct comparisons.

How do I book and pay?

Book through the form at the bottom of this page, on WhatsApp, or by phone at +255 774 077 465. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, bank transfer and cash (USD or TZS). Reservations are usually confirmed within an hour during business hours.

Can I combine this with other tours during my trip?

Yes — guests often pair this with a Kizimkazi dolphin tour the next morning, a Jozani Forest visit, or a Stone Town walking tour. Message us with your dates and we'll build a custom itinerary at no extra cost.

Ready for Two Waters in One Unforgettable Day?

Reef, starfish, sunlit cave — all on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, all in 6 hours. We confirm bookings fast and tailor everything to your hotel and schedule.
