3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari From Zanzibar

It is a 3-day, 2-night trip. You depart Zanzibar early on Day 1 and return to Zanzibar in the evening of Day 3. You spend Night 1 inside the Central Serengeti and Night 2 on the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

You take a domestic scheduled flight from Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Arusha Airport (ARK) — approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. From Arusha, you transfer overland in a 4×4 Land Cruiser into the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The total Day 1 journey is roughly 8 hours including the flight, but you are already game-driving the moment you cross into Serengeti.

Yes — this is one of the few short safaris from Zanzibar where all five Big Five sightings are realistically possible. Lions, elephants, and buffalo are very reliable in both parks. Leopards require luck and a good guide, especially in the Seronera River Valley. The black rhino is the most elusive — Ngorongoro Crater holds the only viable population accessible on this itinerary, currently estimated at around 25 individuals. Your guide will work the rim and Lerai Forest fringes specifically to find them.

It depends on when you travel. The migration is a year-round circular movement; the herds are always somewhere in the Serengeti ecosystem. From January to March they're on the southern plains (calving). In April–May they move through the Central Serengeti — exactly where you'll be. June–July they cross the Grumeti River in the west. August–October the famous Mara River crossings happen in the far north. November–December they return south through the Central Serengeti. For this 3-day Central Serengeti itinerary, April–May and November–December are when the migration is most likely to be directly visible from your game drive area.

Yes, emphatically. The Crater holds the highest density of wildlife per square kilometre anywhere in Africa, plus the only black rhino population accessible on a short fly-in from Zanzibar. A morning inside the Crater regularly produces lion prides, large elephant bulls, buffalo herds, and flamingo flocks within a single drive. It is a completely different landscape and experience from the Serengeti plains — both are essential.

Children aged 6 and over are welcome on this safari. The flight is short, the vehicle is comfortable, and the wildlife is exceptionally visible — which means children stay engaged. Children under 6 may find the long Day 1 transfer tiring; for younger travellers we recommend our 1-Day Mikumi Safari as a shorter alternative.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission risk. Both parks are in malaria-risk areas — we strongly recommend speaking to a travel doctor about prophylaxis before your trip. The WHO Tanzania country page has current advisory information.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti both have ranger posts and lodges with medical capability. For serious incidents, emergency air evacuation can be arranged from either park — this is exactly why we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage as a non-negotiable for this trip.

The Ngorongoro Crater rim sits at approximately 2,300 metres elevation — significantly higher and cooler than the Serengeti or Zanzibar. Mornings are cold (5–12°C / 41–54°F) and you'll want a fleece or light jacket. The crater floor is warmer once the sun is up. Pack layers.

We monitor every scheduled flight and have contingency arrangements with multiple Tanzanian carriers. If your inbound or outbound flight is significantly delayed, we'll rearrange accommodation and game drive timing without additional cost. Weather-related delays in the rainy season do occasionally happen — this is one reason travel insurance is essential.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in Tanzania. The customary tip for an excellent safari guide is $20–30 per guest per day. Lodge staff are typically tipped $5–10 per guest per day, often pooled. Tips are not included in the package price.
