If you have between five and ten days in Zanzibar and want to see the best of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit — including all of the Big Five — without giving up half your beach holiday, the 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari from Zanzibar is the most efficient way to do it.

You will fly from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in around 1 hour 15 minutes, descend straight into Tarangire National Park the same afternoon, sleep that night in a comfortable lodge near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and wake before dawn on Day 2 to drop into the Ngorongoro Crater — the only place in Tanzania where a one-day game drive routinely produces the entire Big Five, including the famously elusive Black Rhino.

By the time you fly back to Zanzibar on Day 2 evening, you will have logged two of the most wildlife-rich destinations in Africa: Tarangire, home to the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania and the iconic baobab landscapes most visitors picture when they think of safari, and Ngorongoro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site holding the highest year-round density of large mammals anywhere on the continent.

This safari is built for travellers on a tight schedule. If you want the same destinations at a slower pace — adding Lake Manyara or an extra crater morning — see our 3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara Safari from Zanzibar. For visitors specifically targeting the Great Migration, our 3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari from Zanzibar is the better pick. About Tarangire National Park — Tanzania's Elephant & Baobab Capital

Tarangire National Park covers 2,850 km² in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, making it the country's sixth-largest national park. It is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and sits roughly 118 km southwest of Arusha, making it the closest major park to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

The park is built around the Tarangire River, which runs year-round through a landscape of golden grassland, dense baobab forest, acacia woodland, and seasonal swamps. During the dry season (June–October), this river acts as a magnet for wildlife from the entire surrounding ecosystem — including from Lake Manyara and the Maasai Steppe. The result is a concentration of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and predators that rivals anywhere in Africa.

Tarangire is best known for three things: elephants (with documented herds of 300+ individuals at peak water sources), baobab trees — the iconic upside-down giants that make Tarangire one of the most photogenic safari destinations in Tanzania — and tree-climbing pythons, a quirky highlight you will not find anywhere else on the northern circuit. The park also holds over 550 bird species, making it one of the richest birding destinations on the continent.

According to the Tanzania Tourism Board, Tarangire is the second-most visited park in northern Tanzania after the Serengeti, and is increasingly chosen by short-stay visitors who want the same wildlife density as the Serengeti without the longer travel time.

About Ngorongoro Crater — The "8th Wonder of the World"

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera, formed roughly 2.5 million years ago when a giant volcano — once thought to have rivalled Kilimanjaro in height — collapsed in on itself. The result is a perfect, bowl-shaped natural enclosure 260 km² in area, 610 metres deep, and 19 km across at its widest point.

Inside that bowl lives a near-permanent population of roughly 25,000 large mammals. Because the crater walls form a natural boundary, animals do not migrate in and out the way they do in the Serengeti — meaning every game drive on the crater floor is, statistically, the densest wildlife encounter you can have anywhere in Africa. This is the single best place in Tanzania to see all of the Big Five in one morning, and the only consistently accessible site in northern Tanzania for the critically endangered Eastern Black Rhino.

Ngorongoro is part of the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a 8,292 km² UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes Olduvai Gorge — one of the most important paleoanthropological sites on Earth, where the Leakey family uncovered some of the oldest human ancestor fossils ever found. The area is managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) and is one of the few places on the planet where wildlife conservation, archaeology, and traditional Maasai pastoralism share the same protected landscape.

For a 2-day safari from Zanzibar, the Crater is what makes this trip exceptional. You will descend at sunrise, spend roughly five hours on the crater floor, and ascend before lunch — by which point most visitors have already seen lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas, flamingos, and (with reasonable luck) a black rhino.

Your Full 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Itinerary

Day 1 — Zanzibar → Fly to JRO → Tarangire Afternoon Game Drive

06:00 AM

Hotel pickup in Zanzibar

Your Blue Green Zanzibar Tours driver collects you from your hotel anywhere on the island and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Stone Town. If you still need help getting from the airport to your hotel on arrival day, see our Zanzibar airport transfer service.

08:00 AM

Flight Zanzibar → Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO)

Board your domestic flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. Flight time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with views of Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day.

09:30 AM

Arrival JRO & transfer to Tarangire

Your safari guide meets you at the airport with a custom 4×4 Land Cruiser. You depart immediately for Tarangire National Park — a scenic two-hour drive south through small farming villages and Maasai grasslands.

12:00 PM

Park entry & bush lunch

Enter Tarangire at the main gate. Your guide handles all TANAPA park fees. A picnic lunch is served at a designated bush site overlooking the Tarangire River.

01:30 PM

Afternoon & sunset game drive

The most rewarding hours of the day in Tarangire. As temperatures drop, animals move toward the river to drink. Expect large elephant herds at close range, lion prides in the acacia shade, giraffe browsing on baobab branches, and impala, zebra and wildebeest concentrating across the open grassland. Your guide will know exactly where the active sightings are.

05:30 PM

Exit Tarangire & transfer to Karatu

Leave the park as the sun sets and drive approximately 1.5 hours west to your lodge in the Karatu highlands — coffee-growing country just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. This positions you for a sunrise descent into the crater the following morning.

07:30 PM

Check-in, dinner & rest

Hot showers, full-board dinner at the lodge, and an early night — the next morning starts before dawn.

🌙 Overnight in Karatu (mid-range lodge, full board)

Day 2 — Sunrise Descent into Ngorongoro Crater & Return Flight to Zanzibar

05:30 AM

Pre-dawn breakfast & depart for the crater

Wake to a packed breakfast and depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. Being among the first vehicles to descend gives you the cleanest light, the coolest air on the crater floor, and the best chance at predator activity before they retreat to shade.

06:30 AM

Crater descent

The road into the crater drops 610 metres along the western wall. As you descend, the entire 260 km² caldera opens up below you — Lake Magadi reflecting pink with flamingos, herds of zebra and wildebeest dotting the grassland, and acacia woodland along the eastern rim.

07:00 AM

Full crater-floor game drive (~5 hours)

This is the single most productive game drive of your safari. Your guide will work through the key zones: the Lerai Forest for elephants, Lake Magadi for flamingos and hippos, the open plain for lion prides, the Gorigor Swamp for buffalo and hippo, and the Munge Stream area where black rhino are most frequently sighted. You will see far more wildlife in this morning than most visitors see in three days in the Serengeti.

12:30 PM

Picnic lunch on the crater floor

A relaxed picnic lunch at the designated hippo pool site — keep your distance from the cheeky black kites that occasionally try to take a sandwich.

01:30 PM

Crater ascent & depart for JRO

Ascend the eastern wall and depart westward toward Kilimanjaro International Airport. Expect approximately 3.5 hours of road travel — your guide will stop for refreshments and a final view of Mount Meru along the way.

05:30 PM

Flight JRO → Zanzibar

Board your return domestic flight. Sunset views over Mount Kilimanjaro on departure are a common bonus.

07:30 PM

Arrival Zanzibar & hotel transfer

Your driver meets you at ZNZ Airport and transfers you back to your hotel. Many guests follow this safari with a slower second leg of their holiday — a Sunset Dhow Cruise, a Nakupenda Sandbank picnic, or a relaxed spice farm tour the following day.

Wildlife You Will See — All Big Five, In Just 2 Days

This safari is one of the very few 2-day itineraries in Tanzania that gives you a realistic chance of seeing the complete Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino — in a single trip. Best Time to Visit Tarangire & Ngorongoro from Zanzibar

Both parks are open year-round, but the wildlife viewing experience changes dramatically across the seasons — especially in Tarangire, where elephant congregations are driven by water availability. The table below is built for short-stay visitors flying in from Zanzibar.

Month Season Wildlife Viewing Notes
JanuaryShort dry spellVery GoodCalving season for wildebeest & zebra; quiet between holiday rushes
FebruaryShort dry spellVery GoodExcellent value, fewer tourists, beautiful green landscapes
MarchLong rains beginModerateSome tracks muddy; birds in breeding plumage
AprilLong rains (peak)ModerateLush scenery but heaviest rains; least recommended

Best overall window: June through October — peak dry season delivers the strongest wildlife concentrations in both parks, and the cool mornings on the Ngorongoro crater rim are at their most photogenic. Tarangire's elephant herds are at their densest from July to September, when up to 300 elephants can be seen at a single river bend.

The dry-season window also aligns with the best months to visit Zanzibar — see our Zanzibar travel guides for monthly weather details across the island.

2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro vs Other Safaris from Zanzibar

Choosing the right 2-day safari from Zanzibar depends on three things: which Big Five you want to see, how much you can spend, and whether you want northern-circuit or southern-circuit landscapes. Here's how this trip compares.

Fly-In vs Drive-In: Which Version of This Safari is Right for You?

There are two ways to reach Tarangire and Ngorongoro from Zanzibar. The fly-in version (this package, $1,495 pp) is what we recommend for almost everyone — the drive-in alternative exists, but it costs you a full day each way and rarely saves enough money to justify the time lost.

We Recommend

Fly-In Safari (this package)

~1 h 15 min flight From $1,495 pp
Best for

Travellers with 5–10 days in Zanzibar who want maximum game-drive hours per day spent off the island.

Why it works
  • You're in Tarangire by lunchtime on Day 1 — afternoon game drive same day
  • Two genuinely productive game-drive blocks: Tarangire afternoon + full Crater morning
  • One single night in a comfortable highland lodge — no fatigue
  • No ferry transfers, no border-of-island logistics

Drive-In via Dar es Salaam & Arusha

10–12 h each way Custom quote
Best for

Strict budget travellers, or visitors already based in Arusha or Moshi who don't need the Zanzibar leg.

Trade-offs
  • Ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (2 h), then ~8 h drive to Arusha
  • Full days lost to road travel on each end — only 1 full game-drive day in the middle
  • Realistic minimum trip length jumps from 2 to 4 days
  • Not significantly cheaper once you factor in extra accommodation and longer guide/vehicle hours

Our recommendation: If you are based in Zanzibar, fly. The math overwhelmingly favours it: you get the same two parks, but with two full game-drive blocks instead of one — and you sleep one night in a lodge instead of three. For anyone already in Arusha, see our partner drive-in itineraries — message us on WhatsApp at +255 774 077 465.

Frequently Asked Questions — 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari

How likely am I to see all of the Big Five on this 2-day safari?

Very likely. The Ngorongoro Crater holds the highest year-round density of large mammals anywhere in Africa — most guests see four of the Big Five within their first two hours on the crater floor. Lion, elephant, and buffalo are essentially guaranteed. Black rhino is seen on roughly 70–80% of crater drives. Leopard is the wildcard — most often spotted in Tarangire's Lerai Forest area on Day 1.

Why fly to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) instead of directly into the park?

Neither Tarangire nor Ngorongoro has a commercial passenger airstrip suited to scheduled flights from Zanzibar. JRO is the closest major airport — about 2 hours' drive from Tarangire and 3 hours from the Ngorongoro Crater gate. Charter flights into Lake Manyara airstrip exist but cost significantly more for very limited time savings.

Where do I sleep on this safari?

You sleep one night at a mid-range lodge in the Karatu highlands — a coffee-growing area between Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. Karatu sits at 1,500 m altitude, so nights are cool and mosquito-free. The lodge is approximately 30 minutes from the crater rim — close enough for a sunrise descent on Day 2.

Is it safe to descend into the Ngorongoro Crater?

Yes. The crater road is graded, well-maintained, and used by hundreds of vehicles every day. All descents are managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) with daily vehicle quotas. Your guide is fully certified for crater operations.

How cold does the crater rim get at night?

The crater rim sits at 2,300 m above sea level, and pre-dawn temperatures regularly drop to 5–10°C in the dry season. Karatu (where you sleep) sits lower at 1,500 m, so it's milder but still cool. Bring a fleece or light jacket — it makes a huge difference at sunrise on Day 2.

Is this safari suitable for children?

Children aged 5 and over typically handle this itinerary well. The fly-in format keeps travel days short, and the Ngorongoro Crater game drive is one of the most visually rewarding wildlife experiences a child can have — animals are close, plentiful, and always moving. For families with younger children, our 1-day Mikumi safari is a gentler introduction.

What about visas and vaccinations?

Most nationalities need a Tanzanian visa, available online via the official e-visa portal. A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission risk. Both Tarangire and Ngorongoro are in malaria-risk areas — speak to a travel doctor about prophylaxis well before your trip. The WHO Tanzania country page has current health advisories.

What happens if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

We monitor your flights from both ends. If a delay shortens your Day 1 game drive window, we either restructure Day 2 to compensate, or — in the rare case of a full cancellation — we provide a full refund or reschedule. Travel insurance covering trip delays is strongly recommended regardless.

Can I extend this trip to include the Serengeti?

Yes. We commonly extend this itinerary to 3 or 4 days by adding the Serengeti — see our 3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari as the natural step up. Custom 4-day Tarangire-Serengeti-Ngorongoro combinations are also available — WhatsApp us for a quote.

Can solo travellers join this safari?

Absolutely. Pricing is per person and we run mixed-group and private departures depending on date and demand. Single-supplement charges may apply for private bookings — contact us on WhatsApp for current availability.

What's the difference between this safari and the 3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara version?

The 3-day version adds Lake Manyara National Park on the way back — famous for its tree-climbing lions and flamingo-pink soda lake — plus a more relaxed pace. The 2-day version covers the same two flagship destinations (Tarangire + Ngorongoro) at the most efficient possible pace for Zanzibar-based travellers.

Do you offer luxury lodge upgrades?

Yes — including premium tented camps in Tarangire and crater-rim lodges with direct views into Ngorongoro. Because luxury supplements vary significantly by lodge, date, and group size, we quote luxury upgrades individually. WhatsApp us at +255 774 077 465 for a custom luxury quote within 24 hours.

How do I book?

Fill in the booking form at the bottom of this page, or message us directly on WhatsApp at +255 774 077 465. We confirm availability within hours and send a complete trip pack including flight times, lodge confirmation, packing checklist, and the WhatsApp number of your guide.
