Overview: Why Choose the 3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara Safari from Zanzibar?

If you have wondered whether it is possible to see all of the Big Five — including the endangered black rhino — explore three of Tanzania’s most iconic national parks, and still get back to Zanzibar’s beaches in time for sunset on Day 3, the answer is yes. This 3-day fly-in safari makes it happen.

You fly from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) on Day 1 morning, then spend the next three days on the world-famous Northern Circuit — game-driving across Tarangire National Park (the elephant capital of Tanzania), Lake Manyara National Park (home to its famous tree-climbing lions and pink flamingo flocks), and descending into the Ngorongoro Crater (the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site). You return to Zanzibar on Day 3 evening.

This is the safari most international visitors imagine when they think of Africa: vast baobab-studded plains, elephant herds in the hundreds, prides of lions on open grassland, and the surreal experience of looking down into a 600-metre-deep crater teeming with 25,000 large mammals. Other operators sell this same circuit as a 5-to-7-day overland trip starting in Arusha. By flying you in from Zanzibar, we compress all the real wildlife time into 3 days without long road transfers.

If you only have 2 days, our 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Safari from Zanzibar covers the two flagship parks. The 3-day version adds Lake Manyara — a smaller, denser, more intimate park that is too often skipped on short trips. Adding it is the difference between a safari and a complete Northern Circuit experience.

About the Three Parks You Will Visit

All three parks sit inside Tanzania's Northern Circuit, the most wildlife-dense safari region on the African continent. Each one is managed independently and has a completely different landscape, climate, and signature wildlife.

Tarangire National Park

The Elephant Capital

Tarangire is Tanzania's sixth-largest national park and the country's single best park for elephant viewing. The Tarangire River runs year-round, making it a critical dry-season water source. The landscape is defined by ancient baobab trees, golden savanna, and seasonal swamps that draw enormous herds.

Lake Manyara National Park

Tree-Climbing Lions & Flamingos

Lake Manyara is small, compact, and packed with diversity. The alkaline Lake Manyara itself dominates two-thirds of the park, with groundwater forest, acacia woodland, and the Great Rift Valley escarpment along its western edge. It is one of only two places in Africa where lions habitually climb trees.

⭐ Our Verdict: Best Window

The optimal time for this safari is June through October — the dry season concentrates wildlife at water sources, particularly in Tarangire where elephant herds gather along the river. January and February also deliver excellent results with lower prices and lower crowds. Avoid April if possible — it is the peak of the long rains and some Tarangire tracks become difficult. The Ngorongoro Crater itself is excellent year-round because its self-contained ecosystem holds resident wildlife regardless of season.

Is This Safari Right for You?

This 3-day Northern Circuit safari suits a wide range of travellers. Here is who gets the most out of it.

🌍

First-Time Safari Visitors

If this is your first time in Africa, this circuit gives you everything in three days — Big Five, baobabs, the crater, and tree-climbing lions. Your guide handles every logistical detail. You will not need a second trip to feel like you have "done" Tanzania.

💑

Honeymoon & Couples

Two nights in the same lodge, full-board romantic dinners, and the unforgettable experience of standing on the Ngorongoro rim at sunrise together. Pair the safari with our sunset dhow cruise back in Zanzibar.

👨‍👩‍👧

Families with Children

The fly-in format spares kids the long overland drive. Elephant herds and giraffes are easily visible from the vehicle. No minimum age — children aged 6+ generally do well on a 3-day circuit.

📸

Photographers

Three completely different landscapes in three days. The crater's morning light, Tarangire's silhouetted baobabs at sunset, and Manyara's flamingo flocks on the lake offer extraordinary subject variety in a short window.

Travellers Short on Time

If you have 7–14 days in Zanzibar, this safari uses just 3 of them and gives you the complete Tanzania experience. Pair it with a Jozani Forest tour or Nakupenda Sandbank trip.

🎒

Solo Travellers

Solo travellers are welcome. We can arrange shared departures with other guests or operate fully private trips depending on your preference. Single supplement may apply for private bookings — message us on WhatsApp for current rates.

Fly-In vs Drive-In: Which Option Is Right for You?

There are two ways to reach Tanzania's Northern Circuit from Zanzibar. Here is how they compare.

Recommended

Fly-In Safari (This Package)

You fly Zanzibar → Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) on Day 1 morning and return on Day 3 evening. All real travel time happens at altitude in 90 minutes each way. You arrive rested and start your first game drive on the same day.

  • Travel time each way~1h 30m
  • Day 1 game drive?Yes (afternoon)
  • Days inside parks2.5 full days
  • Fatigue levelLow
  • Included in $1,695Yes

Best for: Most travellers. Anyone with 7+ days on Zanzibar who can spare 3 days for an inland safari. Families, couples, photographers, first-time visitors.

Alternative

Drive-In Safari via Dar es Salaam

You take the ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (~2 hours), then drive ~10 hours north through central Tanzania to Arusha. Total one-way travel from Zanzibar: 12–14 hours. You lose Day 1 and Day 3 to road transfers.

  • Travel time each way12–14 hours
  • Day 1 game drive?No (travel day)
  • Days inside parks~1.5 full days
  • Fatigue levelHigh
  • Included in $1,695No (separate quote)

Best for: Budget-focused travellers willing to trade game-drive time for lower cost, or visitors who are already based in Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

Our recommendation: For any traveller based in Zanzibar, the fly-in is overwhelmingly the better choice when you factor in time, energy, and the actual game-drive hours you spend inside the parks. The driving alternative typically costs only 15–20% less but delivers roughly half the wildlife time.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions guests ask us most often before booking the 3-day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara safari from Zanzibar.

How long is the 3-Day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Manyara safari?

The safari runs 3 days and 2 nights. You leave Zanzibar on Day 1 morning (around 07:30 from ZNZ airport) and return on Day 3 evening (around 19:00 back to ZNZ). Both nights are spent at the same mid-range lodge in Karatu.

How do I get from Zanzibar to the Northern Circuit?

You take a scheduled domestic flight from Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. From JRO, your safari guide and 4×4 vehicle drive you directly to Tarangire National Park (about 2 hours). On Day 3, you fly back from JRO to ZNZ in the evening.

Can I see the Big Five on this safari?

Yes — this is one of the very few safaris in Africa where you can realistically see all five of the Big Five within 3 days. Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all present across the three parks. Black rhino is only found in the Ngorongoro Crater, where the resident population is regularly seen on the crater floor during the Day 3 game drive.

Is the price of $1,695 really all-inclusive?

Yes. The price covers your return flights from Zanzibar, all park fees for the three parks (Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro), the Ngorongoro Crater service fee, your 4×4 safari vehicle and professional guide, two nights at a mid-range Karatu lodge on full-board (breakfast, lunch, dinner), bottled water on safari, and all taxes.

Not included: Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, optional tips, and personal expenses. The full list is in the Price section above.

What is the best time of year to do this safari?

The dry season from June to October is the optimal window. Wildlife concentrates around water sources and game viewing in Tarangire reaches its peak when elephant herds gather along the Tarangire River. January and February are also excellent — slightly warmer, fewer crowds, and lower lodge rates.

April and early May are the peak of the long rains and we recommend avoiding them if possible. The Ngorongoro Crater itself is excellent year-round because its resident wildlife does not migrate.

Do I need a separate visa for the safari?

If you are already in Zanzibar, you do not need a second visa — Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, and the same visa covers the mainland. If you are an international traveller, ensure your Tanzania visa is valid through your return date. Apply in advance at the official Tanzania e-visa portal.

Are the Ngorongoro Crater game drives included?

Yes. The Ngorongoro Crater entry fee and the separate crater service fee (charged in addition to standard park fees) are both included in the $1,695 price. Your full crater game drive on Day 3 — including descent, half-day on the crater floor, picnic lunch, and ascent — is all part of the package.

What is the accommodation like in Karatu?

You stay two nights at the same comfortable mid-range lodge in Karatu, a highland town between Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro. Standard partner lodges in this tier include Country Lodge Karatu, Farm of Dreams Lodge, and Eileen's Trees Inn. All offer private en-suite rooms, hot showers, full-board meals, and landscaped gardens.

For luxury upgrades (The Manor at Ngorongoro, Gibb's Farm, Ngorongoro Serena), message us on WhatsApp for a custom quote.

Is this safari safe for children?

Yes. There is no minimum age, but the safari works best for children aged 6 and above who can sit through full-day game drives. The fly-in format spares kids the long overland drive, and the easily visible elephant herds and giraffes in Tarangire are particularly engaging for younger travellers. We can arrange child-friendly meals at the lodge on request.

What should I pack for the safari?

Pack neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, olive — avoid bright colours and white), a light fleece or jacket for the cool crater mornings, closed-toe walking shoes, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, DEET-based insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with extra battery or power bank. The Ngorongoro Crater sits at 1,800–2,300 metres and is genuinely chilly at dawn — do not skip the warm layer.

Do I need vaccinations or malaria medication?

Tarangire and Lake Manyara sit in malaria-endemic zones, so antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your doctor or travel clinic at least 4 weeks before departure. Yellow fever vaccination is required only if you are arriving in Tanzania from a country with active yellow fever transmission — check the current list with your travel doctor.

Will the safari operate if it rains?

Yes. Light rain does not stop safari operations and game viewing often improves after a brief shower as animals come out to drink. If severe weather affects your domestic flight, we will inform you well in advance and rebook to the next available departure at no cost.

Can I combine this safari with other Zanzibar activities?

Absolutely — this is the most common booking pattern. Most guests pair this 3-day safari with a Jozani Forest tour, a Blue Lagoon snorkeling trip, a spice farm tour, or a sunset dhow cruise. Browse all our Zanzibar tours to plan a complete itinerary.

How do I book and how do I pay?

Fill in the booking form below or message us directly on WhatsApp at +255 774 077 465. We confirm availability within a few hours, send you full trip details, and accept payment by bank transfer or card. A deposit secures your booking; the balance is due closer to departure.
