Swimming With Dolphins in zanzibar

A dolphin tour in Zanzibar is a guided boat trip that takes you to areas with wild dolphins, mainly around Mnemba Island, where you can watch them in their natural habitat and, when conditions allow, swim nearby. We run this tour early in the morning when dolphins are most active and include snorkeling gear, safety equipment, and a marine guide. We avoid chasing or disturbing the dolphins, making the experience safe, calm, and responsible.

Overview

Swimming with Dolphins in Zanzibar offers an unforgettable experience in the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean.

The two main spots for dolphin tours are Mnemba Atoll and Kizimkazi.

At Blue Green Zanzibar Tours, we prefer dolphin experiences around Mnemba Atoll, and trust us—it’s the best spot for this magical encounter!

Why Mnemba Over Kizimkazi?

More Ethical & Less Crowded

Unlike Kizimkazi, where multiple boats often chase the dolphins, Mnemba offers a more relaxed, ethical, and less intrusive experience.

The dolphins here are more comfortable, making for a better and more natural swim.

Clearer, Calmer Waters – Mnemba is known for its turquoise, glass-like waters, offering better visibility when swimming or snorkeling.

You won’t just see dolphins—you’ll see them in their full, breathtaking beauty.

More Than Just Dolphins

After your dolphin encounter, you’ll get to explore Mnemba’s world-famous coral reefs, home to tropical fish, sea turtles, and stunning marine life.

It’s a two-in-one adventure!

Less Travel, More Fun

Mnemba is closer to most hotels in the north (Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe), meaning less time on the road and more time in the water!

“Unforgettable Day Watching Dolphins, Fish & Sea Turtles”

— Teresa F | TripAdvisor Contributor (29 reviews)

“Fabulous experience that exceeded our expectations!! First we went dolphin watching near the island of Mnemba and it was a mind-blowing experience to throw yourself into the sea when the captain says ‘jump!!!’ and see perfectly a family of dolphins passing by.

Then we went to a sandbank near Mnemba where we had a delicious fruit appetizer and snorkeled, and when we returned, we were taken to Salaam Cave for swimming with sea turtles.

The truth is that it was a little crowded, but there are a lot of people who are allowed into the cave and the turtles come to touch you to ask for food!! They’re beautiful.”

Images shared by Teresa on TripAdvisor show dolphins near Mnemba, snorkeling at the sandbank, and sea turtles at Salaam Cave.

Because it’s one of the few places in East Africa where wild dolphins are easily spotted year-round.

Zanzibar is home to two main species of dolphins:

  • Bottlenose dolphins – playful, curious, and often found close to shore

The warm, calm waters of the Indian Ocean create the perfect environment for dolphin spotting — especially around Mnemba Island, the most responsible and reliable location for safe dolphin encounters.
